In this episode of “The X” for Realtree, we’re in a barely field in eastern Alberta. The stubble was short and the hide was tough, but the ducks were comfortable in the field. Rarely does a hunt goes this smooth and quickly, but this is a hunt we’ll never forget. Just as fast as one group would come in, another would be on the way. Scouting, good weather conditions, and timely calling made this come together in just 25 minutes as we shot a 5 man limit.
Our latest duck hunting video for “The X” on Realtree was setup by two days of scouting. We found a good number of ducks roosting, feeding, and loafing within 1.5 miles of each other. We spent 2 days determining exactly what they were doing and when they were doing it. The small pond was being used as a transition area between roost and feed and also during the midday. This offered us a perfect opportunity to slip in there before sunrise and wait for ducks to start hitting it. The end result was an awesome few hours with mallards and pintails dive bombing the decoy spread!

One of the most overlooked aspect of being successful while waterfowl hunting is scouting. We have always put a huge importance in doing your pre hunt homework by spending time glassing and driving. The time waterfowl hunters put into the hunt before it even happens typically has a direct correlation to how well the hunt ends up.
This week on “The X” on Realtree.com and their YouTube channel, we take a look at some scouting tips to help you be successful as well as take you through an afternoon of how we scout waterfowl. We had found a good concentration of ducks spending a lot of their time with flocks of snow geese. Through 2 days of scouting, we came up with a plan to be able to hunt these ducks without having to deal with the thousands of snows. Be sure to tune back in next week to see how all of our scouting worked out.
Earlier this year we announced a new partnership with Realtree that included a new line of duck and goose hunting videos titled “The X”. This was going to be a line of videos unique from our standard Fowled Reality shows. For the next 10 weeks, we’ll have new content that will be a part of Realtree.com as well as the Realtree Outdoors YouTube channel and social media outlets.
The Canada goose hunting opportunities New York has to offer are some of the best in the country. Their early season features a 15 goose per man daily limit as well as the ability to hunt without a plug. We traveled there last month to start their season off. A recent cold front pushed some early migrating geese south to combine with an abundant resident population making for some great goose hunting.
